Clash of Titans

Clash of Titans

You can always count on Donatella Versace to show us how it's done. In her twentieth anniversary show at Milan Fashion Week SS18, she called upon the original supermodels to strut their stuff.

As Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Carla Bruni and Helena Christensen glided down the catwalk, two worlds collided. The models of the nineties and noughties, the women who made it without reality shows and Instagram (heaven forbid!), stepped into the world of Kendall Jenner and GiGi Hadid.

Perhaps it is time for history to start repeating itself.

The fashion industry has felt a lot of heat recently for its lack of period-defining icons and, with moves like this from Versace as well as L'Oreal, this criticism is only set to intensify. It's starting to seem like all it takes to succeed as a model is a strong social media following and a 'famous family.'

Watching these original supermodels take another turn on the runway feels like a cry for help. And it's a cry that is being answered. This season marked the debut of a number of up and coming models. Models who have made it because of who they are, not because of where they come from.

One can only hope that this trend continues. Seeing such elegance and beauty grace the runway, I couldn't help feeling a little nostalgic.
