Quad Style: Luke Lundstrom

Hi, my name is Luke Lundstrom, a second year in the College majoring in Political Science and Psychology. On campus I am the Sponsorship Manager for MODA, the Marketing Director for UAID (United Against Inequities in Disease), and the Managing Editor of the Undergraduate Law Review. When I’m not doing class readings, running late to meetings, or pretending to do work, you can probably find me in the gym or on my way to boxing. I’m that annoying healthy friend we all have.

I’m wearing a jean jacket from GAP, distressed denim jeans from Asos, a bandana from Urban Outfitters, a turtle neck from Select Homme, and Adidas sneakers

How would you describe your personal style?

My style is definitely evolving but could be described as “classic chic.” I really like timeless, classic clothing that is accented with current trends or unique pairings. I really like to pull from current trends and then style these with items I’ve had in my wardrobe for a while. Whether it be a basic turtle neck or classic button up, I like to utilize current trends or styles as contrast to more typical, basic clothing. Lately I really have been into streetwear and like to adjust my typical outfits to showcase this interest.

Where do you find style inspiration?

I take my inspiration from a lot of direct places. For a long time I would get inspired by what others would wear, it just took the confidence to incorporate these looks into my own wardrobe. Now a days, I am influenced a lot by what my friends wear as well as the fashion bloggers that I follow on social media. I also really like following high fashion, not to the extent of necessarily purchasing these opulent pieces but finding ideas similar to them or the stylings they utilize and then incorporating that into my wardrobe.

Where do you like to shop?

My friends would probably tell you I'm a shopaholic so needless to say I shop from a lot of different stores. Right now, I really am into browsing Asos or Zara and online secondhand stores like Poshmark, Mercari or the Realreal.

I also really like to get unique, interesting clothing from the places I travel to. Rather than getting typical souvenir or touristy goods, I like to buy clothing that is unique to the place I am in, so that is a large contributor to my wardrobe.

Do you have any fashion regrets?

I think my biggest regret was just trying to use fashion as a way to hide my insecurities. In middle school and part of high school I used fashion as a way to blend in or to remain unnoticeable. I think that would be my largest regret.

My second look I’m wearing is Kris Van Assche Wool Jogger Pants, a Top Man button down, a bomber jacket from a market in China, a thrifted neck bow, and Taft Jack Boots.

What is your relationship to fashion? Has it changed over time?

My relationship with fashion is definitely a developing one. Over the years I have been able to develop my own personal style and incorporate ideas or pieces that I haven’t had the confidence to wear in the past.

But since coming to college and really coming into my own, my sense of style has really developed. I love how fashion allows you to express yourself to society in a minimalist way. Your outfit, whether you try to or not, will create an impression of you from the people you meet. I like to try to create an impression that I would be proud of. With that, sometimes I find myself introverted or not wanting to directly interact with people, fashion allows me to do so in a simplistic way. Fashion is a way to interact with society in a pluralistic manner while still being able to maintain your own eccentricities.

Why is fashion important to you?

Fashion has become a larger part of my life in the past couple years. It has become really more than just a manner of dress or presenting myself to society. That sounds garishly deep and probably contrived to some. But it really has become a larger part of my life. It has become an outlet to destress and maintain a sense of self confidence. Following these stylings, various brands, designs, and fashion blogs has been a really great way for me to get away from the horror of UChicago midterm and finals week(s). Additionally, when I am wearing an outfit I am proud of or somewhat that is unique (which I usually try to do) it gives me a lot of confidence. If you look good, you feel good. It is a personal motto.
