#sunnycares, Right?

If you didn't see this photo on your Instagram feed on May 3rd, consider yourself unique.

I posted it, most of my friends posted it, and hell, maybe even you did too. If we're being honest here, I didn't even like the swimsuit. What I knew though, like most millennials, is that if something is being offered for free, take it. And boy did we all take it.

But here's the catch – this swimsuit may have been free (minus shipping and handling), but it came at a heavy cost for my ego.

A recap of how this was supposed to play out for those who may have forgotten:

  1. Repost the photo within 24 hours of it being posted and tag Sunny Co. in just about every way possible to ensure it's seen.
  2. Sunny Co. will DM you a promo code so that you only need to pay shipping at checkout.
  3. Sunny Co. will also donate $1 to Alzheimer's research for every #sunnycares

Obviously only part #1 happened. In fact, soon after the post went viral, Sunny Co. rescinded point #3:

You know, on some level I understand that move. Literally millions* of people (*estimation) tagged #sunnycare. But, it kinda sucks because a ton of people I know reposted just to donate.

Ok so that blows, but you still get the free swimsuit right?

Right?

Maybe. After the giveaway period ended, Sunny Co. posted this:

The code was "Sunny" for those who were wondering.

Now. This is where it got overtly suspicious. Supposedly only people who resposted and tagged Sunny Co. were eligible for this free swimsuit. But since you don't order through Instagram – and since they decided not to DM participants their own code – there's no real way to tell this.

And that's not even it.

On their site the bathing suit is sold out in every colour and every size. Every. Single. One.

We got played. We all got played. Sunny Co. duped us into providing free advertising, with the lure of a free bathing suit. And it was out of stock the whole time.

I said before that this "free swimsuit" came at a heavy cost, and it did. My ego is irreparably damaged. To be fooled by a blatant manipulation of consumer interest after two and a half whole quarters of SOSC? For shame.

If you need me, I'll be on the third floor of the Reg, crying and probably re-reading Das Kapital.
