Skin Survival Tips for the Next Polar Vortex
Let’s be real here, the government isn’t doing anything to stop global warming so there will inevitably be another polar vortex pretty soon. Without further ado, here’s a skincare Itinerary that can be utilized for any snow day of the year!
Begin with the basics. Personally, there is nothing more that I want to do than take a nice, long hot bath and shower on a bitterly cold day. Unfortunately, this is working against your skin! Try to take the temperature down a notch and keep showering to a minimum. The hot water deprives your skin of nutrients fast; bathing or showering in lukewarm (or if you can handle it, a cold) shower is better for your skin and lymph drainage.
Immediately after the shower, go straight for the oil. Lotion doesn’t always cut it in extreme temperatures, but a body oil will really work its way into your skin when you moisturize right after of the shower. My favorite is the Burts Bees Mama Bee Body Oil. It’s fresh lemon scent makes me feel fresh and clean.
Your face also needs the same amount of attention (if not more) , and going outside with water based moisturizers and make up can be counter-productive. It will begin to freeze and it won’t remain a protective layer on your skin. Using an essential oil will create a moisturized barrier on your skin. My favorite is the Elemis Superfood Facial Oil, which smells beautiful and leaves my face feeling so soft.
Don’t forget the lips! Take the time to really do a full lip treatment. There is nothing worse than having chapped and dry lips. Start out with a gentle home-made sugar and honey lip scrub to gently exfoliate your lips and follow up with a lip oil or your favorite heavy lip balm. The thicker the layer, the better! Apply throughout the day if needed. My favorite is the Glossier Balm Dotcom in Birthday Cake (use this code for 10% off of your first order!).
Perhaps the best skin moisturizer isn’t even topical…humidifiers are a KEY in the winter, keeping it on all day, everyday will be a skin saver and also help your lungs! Check out some of our favorite humidifiers here.
Last, but DEFINITELY not least, drink tons of water! Keeping hydrated will also hydrate your skin, and you must work double time on the coldest of days!
