Jean Paul Gaultier Reigns Supreme in His New Collab
The spirit of collaboration within the fashion industry has never been more prevalent than it is right now. It seems like brands from all over the world and high fashion spectrum are teaming up to put together unique collections that combine two completely different points of view, creating connections in the fashion community that nobody saw coming. Earlier this month, another one of these unexpected collabs was announced online: Supreme x Jean Paul Gaultier.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the works of Jean Paul Gaultier, here’s a quick rundown. Originally known as fashion’s enfant terrible in the 80’s, Jean Paul Gaultier is notorious for his eccentric, unusual and idiosyncratic vision of fashion. From designing skirts for men, or accessorizing his models in head-to-toe tattoos, Gaultier was always fascinated with expanding fashion into the realms of subculture, streetwear and club aesthetics. Not to mention, he has always been adamant about casting models of all shapes, colors and sizes, aiming to expand the range of opportunities for models in the industry.
From dresses made entirely of bread, to feathered grass corsets, Jean Paul Gaultier was a designer who never backed down from a challenge. Oh and did I mention, he’s the man behind Madonna’s infamous cone bra? Despite the glorious creativity that came from his house, in 2014, Gaultier decided to put a pause on ready-to-wear fashion to focus solely on his couture line, leaving the mass consumer market devoid of his idiosyncratic vision.

That’s where Supreme comes in.
Originally founded as a skateboarding apparel company, Supreme is one of the most recognized streetwear labels on the market today. Their iconic red-boxed logo and minimalistic screen printed aesthetic made them instantly recognizable and their collaborations with huge high end labels like Comme des Garcons, Gucci and Louis Vuitton put them right in the heart of luxury fashion. The relative accessibility of the brand has allowed it to make its way into the closets of students and superstars around the world.
This collaboration marks a return to the people for one of the most iconic fashion brands in the world. In talking to Vogue about the collaboration, Gaultier explains:
"I have been including elements of sportswear in my collections from the very beginning, it has been one of my codes and my obsessions, I even developed a line ‘Junior Gaultier’ at the end of the 1980s [with that focus]. With Supreme, this inspiration will find its way to a new generation."
In many ways, the Supreme x Jean Paul Gaultier collaboration represents a democratization of fashion from a brand that truly understands the importance of the everyday. With rumors that this collection will focus on his iconic Madonna-inspired looks (Lourdes Leon, Madonna’s daughter, will be the face of the collection), we can only expect that the collection will really push the boundaries of streetwear, hopefully impressing hype beasts and fashionistas alike.
Keep your eyes peeled, the collaboration drops online and in store on Tuesday, April 11th and we can assure you, it will go fast!
