Is Phoebe Philo Coming Back to Save Fashion?
When Phoebe Philo ended her 10-year tenure at Céline (now stylized as Celine under the creative direction of Hedi Slimane), fashion lovers around the world mourned. Vogue’s Sarah Mower stated that Philo was “ a proven genius for tuning into the intuitions of a generation—she’s acted as lightning conductor of the female energy of the times, twice over.” The confident Céline woman that Philo worked years to mold was a look that would be greatly missed and highly sought out after Philo’s departure from the brand. A chief merchant at the online resale shop TheRealReal reported that search results for Céline rose 42% after the announcement of Philo’s departure. Instagram accounts such as @oldceline were created, admiring the brand’s pieces under Philo’s direction.
Fortunately, Philo’s departure from Céline was not a permanent goodbye to the fashion industry. Despite Philo keeping a quiet profile since leaving Céline, there have been recent reports that Philo is planning to launch a new collection for either her own brand or fashion house Azzedine Alaïa. While these reports have been circulated widely, these plans are still rumors as Philo has yet to confirm them.
If true, however, the cult following that Philo amassed during her time at Céline will have reason to celebrate. Only time will tell for certain.
