Designer Profile 2025: Rosalyn “Roz” Jia
enter the Roz-verse…
The story starts like this: Roz’s debut as a fashion designer begins with MODA. As a Computer Science major, she’s taken inspiration from technology to bring you a futurism-themed collection. She is drawn to unconventional fabrics, specifically metallically lustrous ones, in this collection. And yet, as gleaming as her fabrics are, they can only approximate the radiance of the designer herself.
you are called to explore her past…
Propelled by the lack of self-expression afforded by the Chinese uniforms she grew up wearing, Roz still pays homage to her heritage in this collection. Her Chinese name, 若菲, Ruofei, is derived from a line in 木兰辞, The Ballad of Mulan, and literally translates to “like flying”. This fact finds its way into her choice of feathers to adorn her designs, and the belt in one of them that is characteristic of the Chinese hanfu. She says this choice is to reflect her authentic self.
to gain insight into her present…
Having had no previous design experience, Roz has outdone herself with this one. Her keen eye for design is evident through her ability to sustain the self-chosen theme in her designs, and incorporate herself in her work – from her love for Sci-fi showing through to the dedication that went into sourcing the right fabrics (most of them eventually coming from China) to her choice of a black-and-white colour scheme to keep things classy.
and to see them shape her future…
She is most looking forward to the reward for her hard work – the satisfaction that comes after the intense pressure of putting together a fashion show with mere months of experience.
