MODA Designer Profiles: Angela Lin

Every year, the MODA Fashion Show wraps up winter quarter with the perfect homage to student talent, hard work and creativity. In anticipation of the show, we will be interviewing MODA Designers. Meet Angela Lin, a 4th year Visual Arts major. 

1. What are some sources of inspiration for your collection this year?

My work is a collection of war gear in which the fighters are going into battle already damaged and broken, with the odds stacked immensely against them. I've been inspired by theorists, artists, and designers. A lot of the theory behind this work is inspired by critical black theorists like Fred Moten and Derrick Bell. I've also been reading a lot of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Italo Calvino for poetic and narrative imagery. Fashion designers I'm inspired by include Grace Wales Bonner, Craig Green, Sergey Grechka, and Simone Rocha. 

2. Have you ever done fashion design work before? What are some of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of the process?

I have not made fashion design before. There is so much technical knowledge and precision that goes into making clothes that I really didn't know about before this process. There is also a lot of theory and conceptual work that goes behind even the most famous runway shows, which I also didn't know. There is so much to know about the fashion industry and about making clothing, which has been equally rewarding and challenging.

3. What are you looking forward to most about the MODA Fashion Show?

 As an art major, most of my work is displayed in realms of art, which are inhabited by mostly "insiders," so I look forward to having my work be out in the world, with an audience that wouldn't normally see it. It's also just exciting to see my ideas become a reality!
