MODA Designer Profiles: Anita Obasohan

Every year, the MODA Fashion Show wraps up winter quarter with the perfect homage to student talent, hard work and creativity. In anticipation of the show, we will be interviewing MODA Designers. Meet Anita Obasohana 2nd year Economics and Psychology double major.

1. What are some sources of inspiration for your collection this year?

My inspiration for my collection was really where I live (Nigeria). The people there radiate a certain vibrancy and confidence that comes through especially in fashion. Lagos is undoubtedly the center of fashion in Nigeria and events, big or small, are often centered on the outfits that will be worn. As expected, these pieces are always nothing short of being as glamorous and outspoken as the people who wear them. It's a culture I've grown up in, and one I would like to celebrate in my first collection.

2. Have you ever done fashion design work before? What are some of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of the process?

I've never really gotten serious about fashion design in the past, so I don't have much experience, except a home education class where I had to hand-sew a simple A-line dress using my own body measurements - it took a LONG time. So, this would be my first time actually making something - it's a scary-exciting feeling.

3. What are you looking forward to most about the MODA Fashion Show?

I'm looking forward to be able to say "Yeah I designed that, and I made it too!"
