Quad Style: Kathryn Hicks
Meet Kathryn Hicks, a second year Chemistry & Environmental Science double major from New Jersey. She's the Arts & Entertainment section editor for the MODA Blog and writes for the MODA Magazine as well. She works in two labs, is involved in Delta Gamma and in a couple "science-y" things like Women in Science and Science Olympiad.
How would you describe your personal style?
I always default to saying "prep punk," which I've also been told is pretty much an oxymoron. Basically, I wear and layer a lot of classic styles in black colors, shorts and tights, and beat up vintage Docs sourced from Ebay. Go-to outfit is always shorts and tights, turtleneck or a flow-y shirt, and a sweater vest.
Where do you find style inspiration?
I find a lot of my style inspiration from random people I spot Downtown and on some blogs I follow. Some of my favorite bloggers and style icons are ToThe9s, WithWendy, Elizabeth Olsen, and Alexa Chung. I also used to be very into Polyvore and accredit those sets and creations to the beginnings of my current love of fashion.
Where do you like to shop?
My go-to stores are Zara, Aritzia, and Mango, although I do like to collect some odd pieces from various thrift stores and flea markets. Recently, I've gotten very into knitting/crocheting and have gotten very inspired by a lot of DIY and sewing projects. I really want to challenge myself and delve into creating some of my own clothes!
Do you have any fashion regrets? Whatβs your biggest fashion faux pas?
A lot of people don't know this about me, but I used to wear strictly boy clothes until fifth grade. I don't know if I regret this, but I will always remember the first "all girls clothing" of brown stretchy gauchos, a glittery orange graphic tee shirt, and converse. The biggest faux pas I can think of is leaving the house when you're not feeling confident in your outfit or forgetting an umbrella and wearing white on a rainy day.
What is your relationship to fashion and why is it important to you?
My relationship with fashion is based heavily on self-expression. Unlike other art forms, fashion and beauty are always with you and can constantly convey your sense of self to others around you. I remember a couple years back, I wouldn't wear certain outfits when I had certain classes because I felt uncomfortable fully expressing myself through my clothes. Fashion has shown me how important it is to be confident in yourself and how easy it is to express this self confidence through wearing what you want, whenever and wherever you want.
