Preserving the Legacy of Malcolm X Through a New Fashion Line

In a time of political uncertainty and social unrest, it only seems fitting for the civil and human rights legacy of Malcolm X to reemerge as a symbol of resistance and unity for contemporary activists.

Enter Malcolm X Legacy, a new clothing line launched by the six daughters of Malcolm X—Attallah, Qubilah, Ilyasah, Gamilah, Malikah, and Malaak—with the intention of both preserving their father's legacy as well as instilling in current and future generations the importance of self-sacrifice, spirituality and justice, among other "X principles."

Offering a range of t-shirts and hats (with more products and accessories to come, including a more experimental, high fashion collection), the line prominently features Malcolm X quotes such as "By any means necessary" and "A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything." In an interview with the New Yorker ahead of the brand's debut at Harlem Fashion Week this weekend, Ilyasah notes “we all understand that our father’s reputation and image were misappropriated by the media in the nineteen-sixties." Through Malcolm X Legacy, the sisters hope to reclaim their father's narrative and set the record straight.
