sample(d) II: the last angels
The second installment of the sample(d) series is a piece titled “the last angels”. Here I sample a myriad of ideas, memories, and most importantly, lyrics. Primarily this piece samples The Last Time by Taylor swift feat. Gary Lightbody (stream taylor’s version), the greatest by Elizabeth Grant, la la lost you by Nicole Zefanya, midsummer madness by 88rising, let’s fall in love for the night by Finneas O’Connell, GOLDWING by Billie Eilish, and many many many more. It may or may not be connected to previous sample(d) pieces in on way or another (*wink). Please enjoy a snippet of a nineteen-year-old’s mind….
the last angels
every breath breaks
cold air into smoke
at 2:13 am this high up
perched trunk-side on a lookout
overlooking LA
and it’s so clear now
that the scaffolding behind the Hollywood sign
is breaking
every golden road
bleeds into the horizon
at 2:13 am this high up
as if the world runs into the sky while our minds run
cold into our feet
wild into a future
yet to unfold
“sometimes I feel like we’re the last ones,” I confess,
“the last of the angels in this city.”
or any city for that matter
waiting woefully for the Light
to come and will our
wings away
The last ones holding onto the dream of a better life
of better days ahead
… And I’ll stay there
on a cliffside looking for a city
for a life
that could — for all we know — never exist
I swear
with every breath that breaks into cold air
… I’ll stay right (t)here
