Study Abroad Files: Turkish Coffeehouses

Study Abroad Files: Turkish Coffeehouses

As the saying goes: "A cup of Turkish coffee will be remembered for forty years.” I’m not sure if this is true or not, but it is a fact that Turkish people can't live without at least one sip of coffee a day. It can also be said that their whole diet centers around coffee: even the word for breakfast in Turkish is "kahvaltı" meaning “before coffee”. In addition to the rich, addictive flavor that leaves an unforgettable taste in the mouth, Turkish coffee brings people together and is a vital part of social life in Turkey. As the nation's biggest city, Istanbul offers the coziest and loveliest coffeehouses for its visitors. Whether they are traditional places with devoted regulars, or third wave coffeehouses which fuse the traditional recipe with innovative ideas - they all leave your palate and soul thirsting for more!

Side note from the author who is already homesick: After having your first Turkish coffee experience by inhaling the fresh, salty smell of Bosphorus or by reliving the past in a teeny winding street full of history, ask a local next to you to read the coffee grains in your cup, which is a kind of fortune telling in Turkish culture. You never know what you'll hear about your future!

You should definitely visit this 93 years old coffeehouse and taste the Turkish coffee at its finest from the most experienced hands. Don't be surprised if you see groups of teenagers, old ladies and  businessmen all hanging out in the same place since this is one of the oldest meeting points for locals.
