"Women of Indie" - Hype for Spotify's Newest Playlist

It is no secret how much I love all of Spotify's discover and curated playlists, and I have recently stumbled across the Spotify made playlist "Women of Indie." The list coincidentally pulls from some of my personal nostalgic favorites from first year as well as a load of new songs I've been very much into the past couple days.

As cliche as loving Top 40 can be (I am guilty of this), these pre-made playlists are an excellent way to explore new music and discover new artists. Here are some of my ~favorite~ songs from the list, but be sure to check out the playlist for yourself and see what vibes with you!

Women of Indie

The playlist mixes older songs destined to bring back any nostalgic vibes (first year, 1:00 am jamming out with raisin bran in my Max twin bed, anyone?), as well as newer releases definitely worth discovering (i.e. St. Vincent's newest album - she'll be in Chicago in January just FYI!).

Winter Break - MUNA

MUNA is a power girl gang of three - Katie Gavin, Naomi McPherson, and Josette Maskin - formed out of friendship at USC when the three were students. This organic formation came out sheer friendship, as Naomi and Katie explain in an interview-bio by Eve Barlow. The trio describes their image as "a dark pop girl band blending the brooding sensuality of R&B, rhythms of funk, and audacity of synthpop with raw, unbridled lyricism," and hope that their music lends to "both to the euphoric dancefloor and emo bedroom solitude."

"We were walking out of class and I asked Katie what she studied and she tells me she’s a music major, and I say, ‘That’s cool, I play guitar’. And she says, ‘Oh you play guitar? you can be in my band.’”

Edge of Town - Middle Kids

Middle Kids is a new, up-and-coming Australian trio. Their self-titled EP "Middle Kids" has lead to much success and hype for the band. Recently, their sound of pop meets country ballad has lead them to cover Blink-182's All The Small Things, keeping the "beautiful words and the melody, but changed instrumentation to bring out different emotion," with the goal to "re-imagine a pop-punk classic as a sad country ballad."

Gemini Feed - Banks

Jillian Rose Banks (or simply BANKS) has taken over the music scene of the past couple years. From going on tour with The Weeknd to being nominated for the Sound of 2014 award by the BBC and an MTV Brand New Nominee in 2014, her music beginnings at 15 with a "keyboard she received from a friend to help her through her parents' divorce," and today her sound " focuses on the duality of soulful earthly emotion and ethereal atmospheric sounds." Aside from all the musical success, she also is by far one of the most photogenic artists I've ever come across - see above for the glory of editorial styled photo shoots!
