Lynette Nylander, Londoner-turned-NYC-resident, dubs her 2019 self as a “funky homosapien.” As for her 9 to 5? She’s busy doing freelance work as a writer and as an editorial and creative consultant. But Lynette is far from just starting out—she was even a part of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list in 2017.

Her most notable roles have been as Deputy Editor at both the British i-D magazine and the American Teen Vogue. Most recently, she was the Vice President of Content (sweet gig) at Alexander Wang until July 2019. While Ms. Nylander did attend the London College of Fashion, she prides herself on breaking into the industry without the help of famous parents or some strange stroke of luck. Her work in fashion has been so impactful because she’s never used it to hide her uniqueness in a sea of family legacies and socialites-turned-influencers-turned-creatives.

And it’s this exact loyalty to her truth that made her time at i-D such a successful launching pad for the rest of her career. The British fashion and culture magazine has always been niche, yet unique in its ability to break into the mainstream magazine pipeline. Lynette took this power of connecting with an audience through recognition of their individuality and ran with it. Alongside Elaine Welteroth, the former EIC of Teen Vogue, Lynette is credited with increasing the magazine’s representation of people of color and its venture into political and social issues—something never-before-seen from the previously bubblegum-pop, tweeny magazine.

When it comes to her feed, Lynette gives her followers a peek at upcoming projects with various publications, a piece of her mind on political issues both across the pond and Stateside, and (of course!) lots of glowy makeup and colorful outfits. Fashion has a long way to go in terms of inclusivity. @lynettesaid is one of many women of color paving the way for future fashion leaders of all backgrounds—and her Instagram presence reminds us of the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead.
