The Winter Survival Guide: Skin Care
As the temperatures decrease, so does the moisture in your skin. Here are some tips on how to keep the flaky, itchy dry skin away this winter season!
Moisturize, Moisturize & Moisturize!
Apply a rich cream based moisturizer that packs in ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and oils to help maximize your skin's water content and locking in moisture! For the body, try slathering on a lotion like Nivea's Express Hydration on damp skin and on your face try Renée Rouleau's Glow Enhancing Cream that will deliver vital moisture to your skin for a glowing result!
If your skin is extremely parched, layer an ointment like Aquaphor for extra protection from the elements!
Make sure to bring hand cream and lotions with you everywhere you go! Leave one in the car, in the office at your desk, in your purse...that way you will never suffer from irritated and cracked hands! For extreme relief look to Avene's Cicalfate Restorative Hand Cream. It is fragrance-free and in a small bottle, perfect for on the go!
Invest in a humidifier!
While it isn't the most glamorous addition to your room decor, its vapor will hydrate your entire body, all the way from your cracked heels up to your flaking scalp! Try this ultra-quiet Crane Humidifier that will add moisture back into your room without adding the heat!
Love your lips!
Obviously never leave home without your chapstick! Try EOS lip balm for convenient and organic hydration! If you suffer from flaky lips, you can splurge on a lip scrub like the Fresh Sugar Lip Polish or these smoothing Korean lip sheet masks (Michelle Phan swears by them)! If you don't want to add even more products to your skincare regiment, you can use a toothbrush to exfoliate your lips and make them nice and smooth for lipstick application!
Don't skimp on the SPF!
It may not be the tropical hot sun, but combined with snow glare, the winter sun can still cause damage to your skin! If you are outside for prolonged periods of time, walking to and from class especially, with skin exposed, make sure to apply some broad spectrum sunscreen! You can even skip a step and purchase a body lotion with SPF, like Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 15! For your face, try EltaMD SPF 46 Lotion, which will moisturize and protect your skin from the winter elements!
Avoid stripping ingredients!
Trade your make-up removing wipes for cold cream, like Pond's Cold Cream Cleanser, which will effectively remove your makeup and leave your skin feeling moisturized and refreshed! Trade your alcohol based toner in for a herbal based variation, like Kiehl's Calendula Herbal Extract Toner, which will still gently cleanse and prep your skin for maximum hydration!
